Almost nothing says “summer in the South” than a yummy, chilled julep. However, the sugar that gets added to most mint julep recipes is typically refined, and not in the way that means “Southern elegance.”
Cheers to Lipton Iced Tea, who ponied up with Eron Plevan, head mixologist at Louisville’s Gold Bar, to create this modern, better-for-you twist on the classic julep recipe. This recipe looks to honey—not sugar—for its sweet character. Plus, if you drop in a generous scoop of the crushed ice this calls for, you can dial back a little extra on the iced tea’s 18 grams of sugar, too. This drink also goes about a quarter lighter on liquor than a lot of juleps do, which might make this a friendly choice to someone who’s just finding out whether they’re besties with bourbon.

Lipton Herbal Orange Blossom Iced Tea
2 orange slices
6 mint leaves
How to Make It
- To make tea honey syrup: combine equal parts honey and Orange Blossom Iced Tea. Stir until combined and smooth.
- In a julep tin, add one ounce of Orange Blossom Lipton Iced Tea honey syrup and muddle two orange slices plus six to eight mint leaves for 15 to 20 seconds.
- Add bourbon, then add crushed ice.
- Garnish with a mint bouquet, a skewered cherry, and an orange rose if applicable.
