There’s never been a better time to start cycling to work. Aside from anything else, the added incentive of avoiding public transport during a pandemic has probably induced more people than ever to enjoy getting around on two wheels instead.
Of course, that’s not the only reason to ride. Cycling is cheap, it’s often faster than other options if you’re in a city, and it’s a great way to add daily exercise to your routine without sacrificing any of your leisure time to exercise. And if you’re still not fully convinced that investing in a bike is a good idea, the good news is you can rent one on a long-term basis instead.
Brompton is launching a subscription service where you can hire its folding bikes for a month at a time or for a year. Your bike can be picked up from hubs all over the UK, though the majority of those hubs are found in London and Birmingham. It’s no surprise to us that the presence is greater in the UK’s two biggest cities, as one of the greatest advantages of a Brompton is how small and neatly it folds up, making it ideal for urban living and its associated storage limitations.
Sign up now to register your interest and for priority access to the service, which will be available to a limited number of people when it first launches. If you sign up for a year the cost works out at £30 a month, while it’s £42 a month if you sign up on a rolling monthly contract.
You get a few extras along with the bike, including essentials like insurance to cover theft and damage, and repairs and servicing with a loan bike offered during the service. There are also handy bonuses like discounts on Brompton products, including a bike if you decide to move off the hire scheme and get your own ride.
Once you’re on the scheme you pick up a bike from one of the lockers at the hubs. There’s a full list of locations on the Brompton website, and the option to get home or local delivery is expected soon.
Brompton already operates a pay-as-you-ride hire scheme from these hubs, which allows 24-hour use of a bike for £3.50.
“There is a significant shift towards cycling now more than ever, but not everyone wants to or can afford to buy a bike outright,” says Julian Scrivens, MD of Brompton Bike Hire.
“Our pay-as-you-ride schemes are already enormously popular, but we wanted to give the public another option which allows them to keep a bike for longer periods.”
